Joba Chamberlain has made six starts so far for the New York Yankees, but none have been as high-profile as this one. He’ll make his first career start against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night when the AL East rivals finish their four-game series at Yankee Stadium. Chamberlain (2-2, 2.22, 1.347 WHIP) is 1-0 with a 2.17 ERA in six outings since being inserted into the rotation on June 3. The second-year converted reliever steadily increased his pitch count in his first five outings, throwing a career-high 114 pitches over 6 2/3 innings in his first win as a starter, a 10-0 victory in Pittsburgh on June 25.

In 1991, rapper L.L. Cool J released a song called Mama Said Knock You Out from which the lyrics have always seemed to stick in my head. The song starts with a news report triumphantly re-introducing a once-absent Cool J, after which he exclaims “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years”…Well, don’t call this release of the 2008 StatFox Edge Football Annual a comeback either, because we’ve also been here for years, we just put the Edge on a one-year hiatus. It may go by name of a different sponsor this year, but the Coke Zero 400 on Saturday night from Daytona is still one of the biggest races on the 2008 schedule. Formerly known as the Pepsi 400, this race combines night racing, superspeedway action at the circuit’s premiere track, and holiday pageantry, making it one of NASCAR’s most prestigious events. This year’s top contenders will seemingly be the whose who of NASCAR, with Kyle Busch coming in as the favorite at lofty 5-2 odds, followed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. at 5-1, and Jimmie Johnson at 8-1. Carl Edwards (7-1) Jeff Gordon (8-1) and Tony Stewart (8-1) are the other drivers listed in single digit odds.

Last week was truly a wild card round, as all four underdogs covered the spread and three of them won outright to advance to this week’s Conference semi-finals. The two upsets that occurred, being the most pronounced were Saturday’s visitors Colorado and New York. Based on recent level of play, both were given a chance to cover the pointspread, but win outright on the road, that was about as likely as Christie Brinkley’s husband cheating on her for an 18-year girl. We know how this is turned out. (FREE FoxSheet on one of Saturday’s matchups)
